Meet Kat Mertsch

Say hello to one of Team Innova’s fastest rising stars. Kat Mertsch, a Team Champion touring pro, has consistently placed in the Top Five on the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT), placing her in the Top 20 of the UDisc FPO Disc Golf World Rankings. When asked what her goals were for the 2022 season, she said, “I’d like to win a DGPT Silver Series and three A Tiers.” She’s making the right moves to earn a big win.

Crystals, Journaling, and Meditation

This Arkansas native is having a breakout season with everything from high-rated rounds to phenomenal finishes at the tour’s elite events. So it begs the question, what’s made the difference? Kat attributes her recent success to her improved mental state. You may see her playing with some crystals or meditating in her van before teeing off. Having a chill mindset—whether she’s playing good or bad—is key to her consistent play.

Disc Golf Roots

Kat is competitive. Very competitive. When her brother Wedge picked up his first disc a few years ago, she had to get in on the action. A sidearm hyzer with a Blizzard Boss was all she threw in the beginning. But she eventually learned to backhand and this well-rounded game gave her the confidence to compete at events. But, competitiveness wasn’t the only reason she pursued disc golf. Kat struggled with depression for many years and found a solution, “Disc golf gave me something to latch on to and gave me a challenge and a purpose.” Her story is relatable and that’s why she’s a fan favorite.

Roc3: Her Go-To Mid-Range

Kat has focused more on her mid-range game in recent months. She prefers the true flight of a Roc3, saying “It’s easy to throw lines with a Roc.” Slower flights that mid-ranges and putters offer point out form errors that might go undetected. The Star Roc3 is her go-to disc for finesse approaches and fast flying mid-range shots.
