What are some of the challenges you face when looking to grow awareness for the game, or getting new courses into the ground?
Disc golf is relatively new in New Zealand. One of the challenges we face, when it comes to installing disc golf courses, is getting the local councils on board. New Zealand is an extremely sporty country. We have a lot of space available but sharing it with other users is usually a main issue. By getting the council and other local bodies involved with current disc golf, by way of ‘have a go’ days, they become aware of how this sport gets people outside and into the community, exercising and being active. Which is what it’s all about really. Enjoying life.
When you are not golfing or working, what other types of activities keep you busy?
Outside of work and disc golf, my time is taken up helping my wife bring up our son Tiaki. He is an awesome little man. Very precious. Other than that, I love to cook and bake. My favorite dish is a gluten free chocolate cake. Mmmmmm.
What discs are in your bag currently?
In my bag, I use the Star XCaliber as a trusty headwind or forehand driver. My main distance driver is the GStar Destroyer. I use a Champion TeeBird and Champion Leopard for my fairway driver’s. My mids consist of Star Gator, Champion Roc3, Star Mako, and the DX Stingray. I use a Star Aviar for my approach shots and my main putter, believe it or not, is a DX Polecat.
Got anything new working for you?
The newest addition to my disc golf arsenal would be my HeroPack backpack. It’s great. Lightweight but sturdy.
What advice do you have for someone wanting to visit New Zealand for the first time?
If you plan on visiting New Zealand, come anytime. There is something for everyone here. Snow sports, summer sports, hiking, water sports, beautiful beaches, award winning winemakers, great New Zealand hospitality, and of course disc golf. I don’t mean to sound bias, but Queenstown is a major world tourism destination. A must visit.
Just ask anyone who has visited this South Pacific country. You won’t be disappointed. Air New Zealand flies from the West of the USA as well as flying to London and throughout Asia. An award winning airline.

Thanks, Hemi! And best of luck throughout the season.
Thank you!
