Championship Week Begins – About the 2022 USDGC and TPWDGC

3650 0

The 2022 United States Disc Golf Championship (USDGC) and Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship (TPWDGC) are returning to Winthrop University this weekend for the most anticipated and prestigious-to-win competitions of the season.

Taking place at the Winthrop Arena for the 24th consecutive year on October 6-9, the USDGC is often a career-defining and life-changing event. To win is to go down in history as one of the greats. Beyond the competition itself, the USDGC has become the best-attended tournament in the States for a reason; the team in Rock Hill runs an event that not only exceeds expectations for a disc golf tournament, but would exceed expectations for any professional sporting event.

The addition of the Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship has been the most significant and exciting change to Championship Week of the past twenty years. Running concurrently with the USDGC from October 6-9, the TPWDGC is a showcase event of 40 of the top female athletes in our sport, playing on behalf of women everywhere struggling with breast cancer. It is a chance to highlight the spectacular talent at the top of Women’s disc golf, inspire new players through the example of our top athletes’ performance, and do it all in the name of a noble cause. With an unbelievable line-up of qualified players, the 2022 USDGC and 2022 TPWDGC are events you won’t want to miss.

What Not To Miss

More of a 10-day festival than just a tournament, the 2022 USDGC and 2022 TPWDGC feature an expanded Championship Village with food vendors, disc vendors, limited-release merch, giveaways, live music, clinics, chances to meet the players and get autographs, and opportunities for spectators to play on the Winthrop Course. On October 5th will be the most exciting Opening Ceremonies in USDGC history, taking place in the Championship Village and open to all spectators.

In addition, Championship Week has multiple competitions all available for spectators to watch; the USDGC Doubles, Monday Qualifiers, Dean’s Cup, US Distance Championship, TPWDGC, and USDGC make for a full schedule of amazing disc golf for players and spectators alike. This year, for the first time, Doubles, Monday Qualifiers, the Dean’s Cup, and the Distance Championship will all include women’s divisions.

Championship Village

Championship Village was established in 2021 to create a fan-friendly environment in the heart of the course. We got off to a good start, but we are going much bigger this year. More entertainment. More vendors. More food and beverage options. And of course, more fun!

Spectator Appreciation Day

Educational Disc Golf Experience (EDGE) and College Disc Golf present your opportunity to play the famed Winthrop Arena Course in Championship conditions – while the footprints of the game’s best are still fresh on the fairways – it’s a thrill for any disc golfer. Tee times can be purchased at the USDGC Pro Shop located in the heart of the Championship Village starting Thursday, Oct 6th at 10:00 am.

Throw Pink Clinic

On Saturday, October 8th starting at 1:00 pm, a Throw Pink Clinic will be held on the Winthrop University campus for women and girls of all skill levels! We will kick off with a disc golf instructional clinic at 1:00 pm that will get new players on their feet and refine the skills of those who have played before. A casual round will follow on a beginner-friendly, temporary course designed by Andrew Duvall, the current USDGC and TPWDGC course designer.

Throw Pink in the Championship Village

Stop by the Throw Pink tent in the Championship Village each day of TPWDGC for fun programs and give-aways! We will have jewelry making, Makani disc coloring, a prize wheel, and putting games! The Throw Pink tent will also feature a place to write and remember the names of those that you have lost to cancer and a place to honor survivors.

Competitions

Championship Week starts off with USDGC Doubles on September 30th through October 2nd, an amateur only doubles tournament that kicks off Championship Week. TPWDGC and USDGC Monday Qualifying takes place on October 3rd with Tee Times starting at 8:00 am. Winners will earn themselves the opportunity to compete the following weekend for the title of Throw Pink Women’s Champion or US Champion.

From October 6th through 9th, the Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship and United States Disc Golf Championship will run concurrently at the Winthrop Arena. Throw Pink tee times begin each day between 8:00 and 9:00 am. USDGC tee times begin between 10:15 and 11:15 am. This year, with the tournament shifted back a day, we will have a Championship Sunday to crown our new TPWDGC and USDGC winners.

The Dean’s Cup will take place on October 8th and 9th with tee times starting at 8:00 am. The Dean’s Cup is a team event available for college students to show their skills on the hallowed grounds of Winthrop. The United States Distance Championships will take place on Sunday night after the USDGC tournament has concluded.
